THE JOURNEY HAS BEGUN! DON'T FORGET TO DONATE YOURSELVES AND DONATE TO KING'S
Un vuelo desde Cape Cod hasta Cabo de Hornos para que la gente piense en salvar vidas a través de la donación de órganos. Mi vida se salvó porque alguien era un donante de órganos. Ahora es el momento de pensar en ello y hablar de ello.
A Journey from Cape Cod to Cape Horn by Cessna Skyhawk to help raise awareness about organ transplants and to raise help for recipients and their families
Dear Friends and Associates:
This is a picture of us in front of our wonderful little Cessna. On the right is Corrine, a purser with British Airways and private pilot, and on the left is Chris, until recently a Captain on the Boeing 747 also with BA.
In early 2010, Chris almost died from liver and kidney failure due to an unknown childhood exposure to hepatitis. Corrine had to face this ordeal with absolutely no warning but found out that there is a support structure for family members in these circumstances. After many months in intensive care at King’s College Hospital in London, Chris was miraculously given a liver transplant at what could only be described as the last minute and most certainly would not be here today if it were not for the incredible team of people at King's College Hospital, one of the top organ transplant facilities in the world giving the gift of life to hundreds of people a year, and leading the way in research.
Transplant surgeons and the army of support behind them deliver miracles to people every day despite having to contend with a shortage of organs. After we’re gone, we can help save up to 8 lives and improve 75 others by being an organ donor but a lot of us have not given enough thought to the issue.
As a way to raise awareness about organ donation and raise help for the King’s College Hospital Charity, Corrine and Chris will fly our Cessna from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts off Cape Cod to Cape Horn at the southern tip of Argentina. The route we will take makes this a journey of some 16,000 nautical miles round trip over long stretches of open water, Amazonian rainforests, the Andes, and through Antarctic weather. aim to set off in December, 2011.
We therefore would like to ask you to assist us through this journey by giving to King's which is one of the world's foremost transplant and reasearch facilities. Every year, they give the gift of life to hundreds of people. "I’m not quite sure why I made it through my ordeal given how sick I was but maybe this chance to help others in the same desperate situation is why I’m still here."
Thank you for taking the time to read this and we appreciate your interest.

FAQ's
When will the flight take place? We want to depart from Nantucket in December of 2011. We'll need a weather window to get south out of winter so hopefully this is all that might cause a slight delay. Our "angle" here is that our little Cessna is a bit small and range limited for such an immense journey. The challenge will be making the journey despite these limitations
How long will it take? We will not have ferry tanks. Only standard 49 gallon tanks so this will mean frequent fuel stops. And something is bound to break sooner or later. So, we're guessing about three or four weeks down and probably a little longer back. Once underway, we'll try not to have a specific timetable. It's safer that way.
Where will the money go? All of the money donated through the links on this website will go directly to King's College Hospital Charity. Donations will not be going towards our "holiday". We will be asking for certain specific donations that pertain to the operating costs of the aircraft but that will be a separate and non-cash effort. Once again, all money donations will go directly to King's College Hospital.
Yes, but where specifically? King's College Hospital Charity has a wide choice of potential areas for donation. We will focus on those areas that most touched us during our experience and will include Listen which is a patient led support group for liver transplant recipients and their families who operate the Listen Lodges, housing for family members of those facing transplant surgery who otherwise would have nowhere else to stay. Corrine was a grateful resident of Listen Lodge during our crisis.
Why the need? Last year in the UK, 1000 lives were saved by organ transplant surgery. And 28,000 transplants were performed in the US. Also in the US, at any time, there are 110,000 people waiting for a transplant of some kind and 18 of those people die every day. And one Canadian dies every 5 days because there aren't enough organ donors.
Almost 90% of us believe in Organ Donation but only 40% do anything about it. A shining example of success is that 68% of Colorado residents however are donors. So we can do better.
Can I send a cheque? Yes. King's can receive cheques. Please write Flight4Lives on the back (UK) or in the memo area (US) and send any postal donations to either:
Kings College Hospital Charity
London SE5 9BR
England
Or
Friends of King's College London Association, Inc.
C/O Chapel & York Limited.
1000 N West Street, Suite 1200
Wilmington, DE 19801
And if I'm a US resident? Please click on the airplane below and you will be able to donate via a special link for US Donors to Friends of King's College London Association, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization. This will open a page just for Flight4Lives and takes all major credit cards or paypal. Then print this FORM to record your tax deductible donation. And thank you.
